Local Control and the Race for Governor

Download our latest resource to educate parents and school board members!

Last week, we made you aware of the politics and policies that are coming our way this year in New Jersey.  One of the major educational policies that must be adopted by local school boards by December 2025 will include a book challenge policy for parents, students, and teachers to request specific book titles be restricted for certain students because the content is age inappropriate.

Director of Advocacy, Shawn Hyland was in Trenton yesterday speaking to members of the New Jersey State Board of Education to urge the Commissioner of Education to include in the State’s model policy age-appropriate standards and criteria for school boards to reference when evaluating books.

Keep in mind, local boards of education do not have to adopt the State’s model policy. They have local control to draft their own policy while meeting state minimum standards.  This is what is meant by the highly cherished concept of “local control” in America over the operation of public education.

What does this mean for New Jersey School Districts?

They have the lawful and proper authority to:

REPEAL Policy 5756 Transgender Student Guidelines

RESTRICT access to sexually explicit age-inappropriate books in the school library

We developed a brand new high quality fact-based resource for parents and school boards across New Jersey to better understand the Issues, the Facts, and what Actions may be taken, and how to address your school board regarding their right to repeal Policy 5756 and restrict access to age-inappropriate books.

What can the next Governor do? Find out!

Are you ready for some more good news? New Jersey will elect a new governor this year! Incumbent Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is term-limited and cannot seek re-election, leading to a competitive race to succeed him

The 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 4, 2025, with primaries set for June 10, 2025.

The New Jersey Family Policy Center will have a voter guide available for the primary election.

New Jersey’s state constitution gives incredible power to our executive branch. Unlike almost any other state in the union, the future governor can appoint a new Attorney General.

This will immediately resolve the current weaponization of the highest law enforcement office in our state that dragged school boards and pregnancy centers into court last year!

Find out who is running for governor and what they can do (and not do) to protect parental rights and pregnancy resource centers by visiting our dedicated webpage for the 2025 Gubernatorial election. This page will be updated regularly as the primary election draws closer.
