What Happened at the School Board Summit

Putting Families First

On Saturday, January 31, school board members from across New Jersey gathered in Colts Neck for our Statewide School Board Summit. The goal was simple: strengthen parent–school partnerships and equip local leaders for the challenges ahead. I had the privilege of working alongside board members and organizational leaders as we shared strategies and encouraged one another in keeping families first.

Despite the harassment many of these volunteer officials face from outside activist groups, the atmosphere was uplifting and filled with applause, laughter, and prayer.

A highlight of the day was hearing from local parents who serve on the Colts Neck Board of Education, speaking as private citizens. They explained how the district’s Parental Bill of Rights that passed last year did not create new policies but simply organized existing state and federal requirements into one clear, accessible document. Their goal is to help parents understand their rights and how to exercise them.

Not surprisingly, activist groups aligned with the political Left, and backed by the NJEA, immediately erupted online with fear‑based messaging. Their reaction reveals a deeper concern: well‑informed, engaged parents threaten the status quo.

Because of the overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees, and the intense backlash from anti‑parent voices – what was meant to be a one‑time summit will now continue meeting regularly. Parents, children, and families are not campaign talking points. New Jersey Family Policy Center is committed to ensuring their voices remain front and center.
