Will You Sit or Will You Stand?

The First Duty of the American Government

President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address was a masterclass in leadership, delivering unfiltered truth-telling wrapped in unyielding optimism. From a conservative viewpoint, it echoed Ronald Reagan’s patriotic fervor, underscoring America’s resurgence under Trump’s “America First” agenda. As a New Jerseyan, I view this speech not merely as a national rallying cry but as a practical blueprint for revitalizing the Garden State, which has endured years of fiscal mismanagement and progressive policies and overreach.

A pivotal moment came when Trump challenged Congress directly: “So tonight, I’m inviting every legislator to join with my administration and reaffirming a fundamental principle. If you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support: The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.”

Many Democrats remained seated, a stark visual of partisan divide. This “sit or stand” test exposed priorities, with Trump shaming the inaction: “Isn’t that a shame? You should be ashamed of yourself not standing up.”

This resonates deeply with the New Jersey Family Policy Center whose fundamental principles demand we take a stand as well. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deut 31:6

  • We recognize God’s handiwork and affirm that life begins with conception and must be valued, loved, and protected, not destroyed, as it is in NJ.
  • Parents are the primary educators of their children, deserving full transparency in curricula and never shielded from information about their kids’ welfare.
  • Religious freedom is sacred; no government entity should infringe on a family’s right to express beliefs.
  • School board members should serve without fear of harassment for their views.

These tenets aren’t abstract—they counter the progressive agendas eroding family values in New Jersey’s schools and communities.

For New Jersey families, these issues hit home amid the devastating impacts of government inefficiency and liberal policies. We’ve witnessed strained schools, overwhelmed communities, and depleted resources in cities and small towns across the Garden State, exacerbated by a government that thinks they are the ones who should be raising our children and transitioning minors without parents knowing.

(See New Jersey Assembly Bill 3323 which establishes protections for persons providing, receiving, and allowing children to receive gender-affirming health care or Policy 5756 where NJ guidance indicates that school personnel are not required to notify parents of a student’s gender identity or expression.)

For New Jersey conservatives, it’s a call to action: reject socialism’s failures and align with a transformative vision where families win, children are cherished, parental rights protected so that God is honored.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, NJ should be reminded of our history. New Jersey is the crossroads of the American Revolution,” hosted over 90 battles, including pivotal Trenton and Princeton victories that turned the war. Washington’s army crossed and wintered here repeatedly, making it central to independence.
